Houston: City of Conquerors

Houston: City of Conquerors

Founded in 1836, the City of Houston today has a population of nearly two million people and is the fourth most populous city in the United States, and the largest in Texas. The Houston-Galveston-Brazoria Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area, called Houston CMSA, consists of eight counties: Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery and Waller. This metro area's population of 4.8 million is the 10th largest in the U.S., covering an area larger than the state of New Jersey. Houston is the home of NASA, the world's largest space center, and in this program we first meet former astronaut Joseph Kerwin, who trains future astronauts. Then we meet David Murphy who works in the oil refinery business. We learn that the city is home to more than 5,000 energy-related firms, and is considered by many to be the Energy Capital of the world; also its port ranks as the nation's largest in international tonnage. Lastly we meet radio announcer Jennifer Blankenship who travels the network of underground tunnels to get to work and avoid the city's humidity in the summer. 08/10DE Closed-Captioned IJSCA 15 min.
