5. Fashion: The Emperor's Old Clothes

05. Fashion: The Emperor's Old Clothes

Shakira (Jasmine Richards) needs some new clothes for school, but she and her mom never seem to agree on the same clothes. Fashion is a funny thing; it's always changing and people never seem to be able to predict where it's headed. While Sam (Mike Ackerman) and Jen (Heidi Leigh) may not be able to tell Shakira where fashion is going, they can certainly show her where it's been. The world has seen a lot of fashion changes over the ages, and about the only thing they know for sure is that fashion doesn't just happen out of nowhere; there's plenty of history behind some of today's funkiest styles. In this program Sam, Jen and Shakira try out some of history's most outlandish fads and trends, such as platform shoes, hippy clogs, hoop skirts and powdered wigs. They take a look at the history of the Scottish kilt; and the ever-popular blue jeans - a trend that's been going strong since Levi Strauss started reinforcing denim work pants with metal rivets. They check out the progression of battle fatigues, even staging an action-packed paintball attack to show how the British Red Coats fared against the more subdued khakis and camouflage uniforms. 05/10DE IJ 30 min.
