08. Sports: Get Ready to Rumble

A natural athlete, Shakira (Jasmine Richards) already excels at the game of soccer. Now she's looking for a new challenge - a sport that will really push her to the limits. With the help of her globetrotting friends, Timeblazers Sam (Mike Ackerman) and Jen (Heidi Leigh), Shakira is about to find out first hand that sports in the past were every bit as challenging as today's World Cup and Super Bowl - maybe even more! The 15th Century sport of jousting, with its constrictive armored uniforms, started out as a means of testing warriors; Ancient Roman gladiators faced off against vicious beasts to the delight of the bloodthirsty crowds; and ancient lacrosse - the first truly North American game - boasted literally hundreds of players and a playing field bigger than most towns. If Shakira could handle playing this rough-and-tumble game for a couple of days straight, she could handle anything. But if it's individual achievement and a real physical challenge she's after, caber tossing might just be the game for her. A rite of passage dating back to the time of the Celtic warriors, this is a tough sport that takes real endurance and a deadly accurate aim when it comes to heaving that 17-foot pole. It looks like Shakira has found a new sport, and the fact that it's got a little bit of mystery and history attached to it makes it all the more enticing! 05/10DE IJ 30 min.
