Pack Burro Race: World Championship 1

Pack Burro Race: World Championship 1

This program introduces viewers to Pack Burro Racing, which is a homegrown sport that began in Colorado in the late 1940s. The World Championship race occurs yearly in Fairplay, Colorado, whose normal population is less than 1,000, and its altitude is around 10,000' in the Rockies. The race, which is part of a Burro Days' celebration, is called the "highest, longest, roughest, and toughest," and entrants must be in tip-top shape - racers and burros have to run 29 miles, climbing up to 3,000 feet. Burros must wear a pack with traditional mining gear, weighing in at 35 pounds, and the burro must be led the entire race by a halter attached to a rope not more than 15 feet long. Simple to understand, very difficult to accomplish, the race is a tribute to the animals and their role in the Old West mining days, and because the burro is a stubborn animal, this makes for interesting "racing." 06/09DE IJSCA 50 min.
