Johnson Digital Atelier: Jon Lash and John Rannou

The Digital Atelier, founded by the renowned sculptor, J. Seward Johnson Jr., is a model- and pattern-making operation for the Johnson Atelier, a U.S.-based school for sculpture; it was established to promote the growing need of technical assistance in producing quality fine art and design through the use of digitally produced data. Host Aylin Green introduces viewers to Jon Lash, a sculptor and master of "lost wax" casting, and the Director of the Digital Atelier, who describes what Total Project Management consists of at the Atelier; also we meet John Rannou, one of the Atelier's talented software engineers, who walks us through reverse engineering and computerized sculpting. We see how sculptures are scanned digitally, redesigned according to the digital artist's liking, then reconstructed through mechanics. Much of the work is done with classical sculptures made of stone, but a wide variety of other materials are used as well. 2009 JSCA 30 min.
