Central Africa: Land of the Pygmies (Timber Logging) - Level 1

Central Africa: Land of the Pygmies (Timber Logging) - Level

Best Documentary -FICA Festival
"Highly Recommended. This program is both compelling and informative. It vividly portrays the plight of the Pygmies, who are caught between their ancient way of life and the enticements of the modern world. The efforts of missionaries and environmentalists are sometimes helpful, and usually well intentioned, but still serve to further degrade the Pygmy's culture. This program will be a valuable resource for those studying the problems in contemporary Pygmy society, and in central Africa itself." -EMRO Review
Cameroon, a unitary republic of central and western Africa, is often called "Africa in miniature" due to its geological and cultural diversity. This part of central Africa is home to the second largest rainforest in the world, which too is home to Africa's oldest known surviving people, the Baka and Bayaka Pygmies, a group of small people who's average height is no more than five foot three. These nomadic tribes have survived for centuries as hunters and gatherers, but now, as the demand for timber increases, the Pygmies' world is drastically changing. This fascinating documentary travels deep into the Equatorial rainforest to tell their story. Here we learn of massive deforestation by timber logging, which is taking away their natural homeland; we see portraits of Pygmy men, women and children during their daily activities; we meet loggers and conservationists who share their perspectives on trying to work and deal with the Pygmies. And as we witness the lure of "progress" closing in on these small people, we wonder if they can find a place in the modern world. Produced by Mayer-Hohdahl Productions. 03/08DE JSCA 35 min.
