Mountain Ski Operations: How a Ski Resort Works

Mountain Ski Operations: How a Ski Resort Works

Skiing and snowboarding today are big business. Of course it wasn't always that way. This program opens with a brief history of skiing; showing how it began to gain popularity after the first chair lift was invented, while snowboarding didn't catch on until the late 1960s. Then we travel to Colorado's Loveland Ski Area to learn from the experts how a ski area works. Of first importance is tracking the daily weather; then Robb Goodell, Director of Business Operations, explains other routines that must be accomplished daily from parking lots being plowed to ski patrols skiing the trails to snowmaking and trail maintenance. We learn about all the various jobs that need to be filled to accommodate the thousands who visit the area daily. We discover how ski schools are an integral part of any area's overall operation and Ski School Supervisor Jon Gillings details what is required to become a ski or snowboard instructor. We travel to Monarch Mountain and Crested Butte Ski Resort, where ski patrollers explain the importance of the National Ski Patrol and the multitude of responsibilities they handle, including avalanche control, marking trails and various techniques involved with mountain rescue. 2010 IJSCA 30 min.
