California Indians 2: Ishi and 8 Northern Tribes
Author Geoge Emanuels begins this program addressing the dishonorable actions against Native American populations by many explorers and settlers; then he focuses on the positive legacy left by Native Americans. He introduces us to Ishi, the last known survivor of the Yana people of California. Ishi, which means "man" in his native tongue, was the name given to California's last surviving Indian by anthropologist Alfred Kroeber, after he was discovered in Oroville, on August 29, 1911. Also George helps us better understand the differences of the Yurok, Karok, Hupa, Maidu, Wintun, Patwin and Pomo tribes.
California Indians 3: The Missions and 7 Southern Tribes
California's missions are a lasting reminder of the days when the first Europeans pioneered this great land; also, they can remind us of the native people who lived here and whose way of life changed forever. In this program, author/historian George Emanuels addresses various aspects of mission life involving the native people; then, drawing from a vast collection of historical photos and drawings, the author/historian completes his thematic approach in illustrating differences between the natives by introducing viewers to seven southern California tribes: the Costanoan, Yokuts, Gabrieleno, Chumash, Luiseno, Diegueno and Cahuilla. To conclude the program, Mr. Emanuels offers a personal perspective on why he wrote the book, "California Indians: An Illustrated Guide."
