Ships of the Great Lakes

Ships of the Great Lakes

North America's Great Lakes, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario, are home to the US- and Canadian-flag fleets, as well as many international vessels, and are used as a major mode of transport for bulk goods. During a normal 10-month season, vessels may haul over 125 million tons of cargo over these waters. This fascinating documentary takes you on tour where very few get to go. Here we take a seven-day journey on board the 1000-foot freighter "American Integrity," carrying coal to Silver Bay, Minnesota, and taconite iron ore to Indiana Harbor, Indiana, and we get an in-depth tour of the ship's bridge and engine room. On our journey we learn about the history of Great Lakes' shipping and various important landmarks; we sail through the Soo Locks, a marvel of engineering; we tour the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and see cadets training to become the next generation of officers and crew; we witness the challenges of navigating through gale force winds; then we dive 530 feet below the waters of Lake Superior to visit the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, made famous by the Gordon Lightfoot song, and hear her fateful tale and listen to Coast Guard voice recordings as the story of her sinking unfolds. Next we join the J.W. Westcott II, which has a 100-year history carrying mail and other supplies to ships on the Detroit River; then we go aboard the U.S. Coast Guard's Mackinaw Icebreaker as they attempt to extend the shipping season; and we close by viewing what happens to ships during the long, cold winter lay-up months before the next spring breakout.
