Muhammed Ali:Fighting Spirit

Ali, Muhammed:Fighting Spirit

Muhammad Ali grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, as Cassius Clay Jr. and started boxing at an early age. During his amateur career he registered 100 wins and five losses and competed in both the famous Golden Gloves tournament and the 1960 Olympic Games before turning pro. By 1963 Ali had won 18 bouts, but he was also building a reputation as the "Louisville Lip," with his confident assurance becoming as much a trademark as his footwork and punches. Clay became the heavyweight champion of the world in 1964 and retained his title the following year. Also in 1964 he changed his name to Muhammad Ali, and in 1966 became a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War and took his personal battle to court, which he won in the end. By the end of the 1970s Ali was firmly established as a cultural phenomenon, and his views on politics, fate, society and life were sought by the media and public, but the first rumblings that something was seriously wrong with the greatest boxer in history had begun. He was examined at the Mao Clinic and diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1983. Since retiring, he has worked endlessly for various humanitarian causes, including the search for a cure for Parkinson's sufferers. Produced by Switch Intl. 2013 PIJSCA 30 min.
