The Beatles: Parting Ways

Beatles, The: Parting Ways

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr - the four most iconic names in pop music; though they began parting ways as a band in 1969, it became official in April of 1970, ten years after their formation as the Beatles. This program examines the phenomenon that was Beatlemania; then documents each musical artist's life after being part of the most popular group in music history. Some blame the break-up on John for forming the Plastic Ono Band with his wife Yoko Ono; though Paul also sought more time with his family and a chance to pursue a solo career, which he did in creating a group, Wings, with his wife, Linda. George went on to not only produce a hit album, All Things Must Pass; but also he collaborated with Ravi Shankar, set up "Hand Made Films," which produced the Monty Python movies, and teamed up with Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, as the Travelling Wilburys. Ringo went on to produce solo albums, did some acting, and later narrated the popular children's TV series, Thomas the Tank Engine. After John was murdered in 1980, the remaining Beatles put their differences asides and collaborated on a documentary series called The Beatles Anthology, which featured two previously unheard songs written by John Lennon - Real Love and Free as a Bird. Despite Linda McCartney's death from breast cancer in 1998, and George's death from lung cancer in 2001, Paul and Ringo, both in their 70s, have battled tribulations to carry on successful careers performing individually.
