Episode 10: Lion Fish, Abalone Diving, The Monitor

In this episode we visit Papua New Guinea to check out the Lion Fish; this is another of the diver's favorite critters to observe and photograph; its spines are filled with venom for protection and defense, but like many marine animals it does not readily attack humans. Abalone diving is a combination of diving and fishing. We spend the day in the perilous life of an Abalone diver and learn why Abalone is highly sought. Into the deep, we investigate US Navy divers' work; this time they are working on a very historic wreck that sunk in 1862, during America's Civil War: The Monitor, which was the world's first battleship that could swivel its guns. More than 150 divers were part of The Monitor recovery team. Lastly, we learn the difference between movements in water, compared to air, with the PADI Seal team. 2013 IJS 30 min.
