MUHAMMAD ALI: FIGHTING SPIRIT

Muhammad Ali grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, as Cassius Clay Jr. and started boxing at an early age, competing in both the Golden Gloves tournament and the 1960 Olympic Games before turning pro. By 1963, Clay had won 18 bouts and built a reputation as the "Louisville Lip" with his trademark self-assurance. He became the heavyweight champion of the world in 1964 and retained his title the following year; also in 1964 he changed his name to Muhammad Ali. In 1966, he became a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, taking his personal battle to court, which he eventually won. By the end of the 1970s, the most famous boxer of all time was firmly established as a cultural phenomenon, but in 1983 he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and his life changed forever. For the remainder of his life he continued his fighting spirit, working endlessly for various humanitarian causes, including the search for a cure for Parkinson's.
