SHANGHAI DECO
"Official Selection" -International Independent Film Awards, 2018
"Highly Recommended. A fascinating, rich and complex program that shines a light on the hidden history of Shanghai's intense period of creative, innovative art and design during the 1920s and 30s."
-Tina Kanagaratnam, Founder, Historic Shanghai
Shanghai, China, a glamorous, cosmopolitan city during the 1920s and 30s, was dubbed the "Paris of the East,” whose expatriate community and middle-class Chinese population adopted many of the trappings of Western lifestyle: jazz, dancing, nightclubs, and Art Deco design. This eye-opening documentary offers a vibrant look at contributions of Chinese designers of the time, the problems of artistic repression during these times of war and political upheaval, and factors that led to the adoption and eventual demise of Shanghai’s unique but short-lived Art Deco lifestyle.
